~ This classic image depicts, in symbolic form, the nature of the creative process and the way to Spiritual-Realization.
~ Life is a dance. The paradox of the reality of the "opposing" opposites.
~ Life is, simultaneously, Creation (the drum/damaru in the right hand), Preservation (the other right hand gesture [abhya mudra]), Destruction (fire in the left hand).
~ Spiritual-Reality is often Concealed (the foot standing on "us").
~ Spiritual-Reality is Revealed (the up-raised foot).
~ The way to Spiritual-Reality is by yoking/yoga to it (the hand pointing to the foot).
~ The ring of fire represents the heat of spiritual sadhana or discipline.
The sublime and powerful image of Nataraja helps the devotee to understand the famous PANCHAKSHARA MANTRA NAMASIVAYA/NAMASHIVAYA or the five (pancha) sacred syllables NA MA SI VA YA.
NA=The concealing grace ("waiting" for
the individual to mature).
MA=The three MALAS (chains) Anava (primal ignorance/ego), Karma
(cause & effect) and Maya (illusory or temporal nature of
existence).
SI=Siva/Shiva
VA=The revealing grace (spiritual
awakening).
YA=The soul (Jivatma).
Notice as one chants this ancient Saiva Mantra Siva is in the center recognizing that Spiritual-Reality/"God" is at the center. In mediation, one may also chant SI VA YA NA MA. This way of chanting puts the individual soul at the center realizing one's true identity.
* Many Hindus use the word "Siva" as those of other religions may use the word "God." Siva is a complex figure. As Siva Lingam, Spiritual-Reality is depicted as the formless form. The "eye" of creation. The "absoluteness" around which all relativity revolves. As Shiva/Shakti or Ardhanareshwara, Siva represents the reality of the "maleness/femaleness" ( + - ) that is creation. As MahaDev and Yogiraj, Siva is the epitome of the yogic lifestyle that each one will undergo on their search for Self-Realization. And as Nataraja, Siva depicts the reality and joy of creation.
